Mama Loves Her Bargains Forum

Hi there! I'm Jenny, a coffee-addicted, busy-body, work at home mom of two insane boys age 9 & 4. I'm married to my best friend, obsessed with the Packers, and I love to cook, read, and design blogs (I'm kindof a geek). If you love what I love, check out Freebie Spot.

  1. Chinese New Year is around the corner. I might try a new recipe, something beyond a basic stir fry!

  2. Quick question for anyone listening: Have you ever had your twitter account suspended and couldn’t figure out why?
Not as quick explanation: I’m pretty new to social media and only started a twitter account when I learned about these blog giveaways two months ago. That’s the only way I’ve ever used twitter. But last night my account was suspended and every attempt to contact twitter just results in another automatic form letter. Searching on the internet turned up a lot of angry people saying this happens pretty frequently and there is never a real explanation.
I guess my giveaway entries will be voided now :(

i agree this forum looks different tody, i love chinese food too, but too much sodium, no msg, more calories than you think….i read somewhere a good low cal dip w/ cauliflower.

  9. I’m looking for low-calorie dip recommendations…do you have any favorites?
(recipes or ones that you can buy already prepared)

    • I don’t have a recipe exactly but most dips that call for sour cream can be lightened with yogurt. Either greek style or strained regular yogurt for a thicker feel. I’ve used this for french onion dips and spinach artichoke dips.

I have a question,When do you stop helping your kids an let them make decisions without asking you to bail them out,,,I have a 38yr old an a 28yr old that are constantly asking me to help out,im talking finacially, right now im feeding my daughters family everynight(2adults,2kids) to help them out, then I see them wasting money of movie rentals, etc,I feel used,,an my son,,I just bought a new central heat an air for him,an now the refrigator has gone out,,I said NO,you got too figured this one out without my help,,dont get me wrong I lvoe my kids dearly but when is it time to tell them Grow up! I also have 3 grown step kids an a 21yr old adoptive daughter

    • terri tillman says:

i think grown children need to be responsible for their own ‘problems’. the more you help then the more they ‘expect’ you to help. helping once in a while is great but every time is not a good idea. you need to put your foot down….now. i would hate to see any grandchildren repeat the process so that when they are grown they start coming to you too.

      • Vickie Couturier says:

Thanks Terri, your right,I did that with this past problem,,I told him ,he had to deal with it,without my help,,I have enought stress without having to deal with their problems too,,I felt bad about saying no,but he did handle it without my help,so I know he can do it

        • I think it’s great to help out your grown children if they have recently had a life changing event (health issues, job loss, etc) but other than that I feel like they need to learn how to take care of themselves. I would never let grandchildren go without food, clothes but the parents need to be responsible and not wasteful of their resources. It’s never easy to see your kids suffer though.
          Best, Karen

          • Vickie Couturier says:

I would never ever let my grandkids go without anything,I know I should be more sterner with my grown kids,im getting better at it,,an Ive told them they take advantage of me,but they dont see it that way,,funny they never ask their Dad for anything,,we were divorced after 30yrs of marriage, but that was 10 yrs ago, this should be the time of my life that I shouldnt be stressed over my grown kids finanical issues, sometimes ignorance is bliss, lol

    • I’ve always felt that if your child is trying hard to make their own way in the world but is still coming up short, you do anything you can to help. Any of us could need the help someday. But if they are just letting you pick up the slack, as it seems in your case, then it is better to leave them to it. One of the most important things a parent can do is give their child the ability to stand on their own. [but I know how difficult a "no" can be]

  28. I don’t usually get bitten by insects, but my hubby does, so he uses my Avon Airbrush Spray, Satin Glow. As a bronzer, it’s a rubbish product and it smells like chemicals. As a mosquito and gnats repellent, it’s great.

I think I’d like to take my family and rent a home in London and live like a local for the whole month. See the sites, eat, make new friends… It would be such an incredible experience for us to unplug and get away from our normal day to day. I think experiences like this really expand my horizons.

  50. Mary Dailey says:

It’s summertime! What do you use to keep buffalo gnats from biting you? They eat me up alive and I hate the thought of using dangerous sprays every time I have to go outside.

    • i’m putting this in the forums- don’t know how it got here!! and i hate gnats too. we use natural bug repellants. badger makes one, so does burt’s bees. and some others, but i have to look.

    • Vickie Couturier says:

Avon has skin so soft which is a great bug repellant, the boy scouts have used it for years to repell bugs or they did when my son was in there
