ins.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/neosporin-eczema-essentials.jpg” width=”400″ height=”600″ />I have eczema. My son has eczema too. It’s pretty much dormant in warmer weather, but it’s been back in full force for at least the past 6 weeks. I’m always on the lookout for something that will help not only provide some relief for itching, but also to help prevent more itching. Neosporin’s Eczema Essentials is a product line that works for those who have eczema but also for those who just have dry, itchy skin.

We have both been using the Eczema Essentials for a few weeks now, and while neither of us is living free of eczema, I know I’ve noticed my son is less cranky, and wanting to change his clothes less often (does this happen to other kids who have eczema? It’s like he wants to change his skin or something but he can’t verbalize that)…and I don’t notice his eczema patches looking quite so ‘angry’ lately. He’s happy there isn’t girlie smell in the products. He’s 5 you know, so he wants to smell like a superhero, not a girl. His words, not mine.

In any case, winter may not be started by the calendar but the air’s feeling wintry and the heat’s been on, which means the skin irritation from drier air has begun. Besides using products like the Eczema Essentials, Dr. Peter Lio has these seasonal skincare tips for us:

Fall:

Many people suffer from seasonal allergies in the fall, and these can trigger skin irritation along with the change to drier, cooler weather.

  • If seasonal allergies are active, talk to your doctor about keeping them in check with medications such as antihistamines
  • Focus on a regular skincare routine with regular bathing and moisturizing, as well as using topical medications when needed
  • Moisturize within minutes after every shower or bath to help lock in the water

Winter:

Cold and dry weather outside and forced hot air inside can put the skin at high risk for irritation. The lack of sunlight may result in lower levels of vitamin D which may be related to skin irritation as well.

  • Keep skin warm and protected when outside
  • Try a thick, protective moisturizer on any exposed skin to prevent windburn
  • Consider talking to your doctor about supplementing vitamin D during the winter months as many people are deficient
  • Consider getting a humidifier for bedrooms to help add moisture to the dry air
  • Moisturize within minutes after every shower or bath to help lock in the water

One thing I learned long ago is NOT to take super hot showers or baths when my skin is dry and/or irritated. It only makes things worse. I’m a little surprised that’s not included in the tips, but maybe that’s because it’s a year-round recommendation.

I found some money saving coupons on the Neosporin site- nice, higher value ones. I hope they help you save some- I know I’m printing some off right now!

The Neosporin Eczema Essential Line is available widely in most drug stores and online.

One US reader will win a prize pack of the Eczema Essentials including one full sized sample of each product, money saving coupons, and a set of trial sized samples, all in a cute plastic tub.
