One Special Day: A Story for Big Brothers & Sisters by Lola Schaefer, illustrated by Jessica Meserve, is a heartwarming picture book about an adventurous and imaginative boy becoming a big brother for the very first time. This playful take on a familiar matter is sure to capture the hearts of parents and children alike!
Does having a new brother or sister make you into MORE than you already are? Spencer is about to find out. He’s as strong as a bear, as funny as a monkey, and as wild as a tiger. But on one special day, everything changes. Now Spencer is strong, funny, wild, brave, free… and gentle, too.
We love children’s literature in our home. I was excited to add this story to our ever-growing collection- the sweet, simple illustrations just bring such a wonderful depth to the story, and having three children myself, the story itself hit very close to home. One Special Day is a nice story, not too long, with interesting illustrations that will likely draw your child in and lead to some discussions above and beyond the story of Spencer and his new baby sister, Mia, himself. (I have it from a good source that there will be another book sharing the story of Spencer and Mia coming out down the road, so we’ll meet these siblings again).
A note from author Lola Schaefer: For more than eighteen years I was a classroom teacher and witnessed firsthand the profound impact that good literature had upon my students. When I began my writing journey I hoped to add to that literary wealth with at least 3-4 resonating books that children would want to read again and again. Years later, as a parent, I again saw that just the right book at the right time could provide giggles, comfort, companionship, amazing information or pique an interest that was never there before. It renewed my drive to write, write more, write better. Now, after twenty years of writing, and thousands of readings with children of all ages, I remain committed to writing books that capture a reader’s imagination and heart and leave him wanting more. I hope that ONE SPECIAL DAY succeeds on both counts.
