WHAT’S EATING YOUR CHILD? The Hidden Connections Between Food and Childhood Ailments was just released on June 6th. Authored by Nutrition Detective Kelly Dorfman, MS, LND, this book is a wealth of resources for those parents who are interested in looking at different ways things your child ingests can be affecting their body and their health.
I know for me personally, there are things that I wasn’t aware of at all before reading this book- some that I was. I’m always trying to look for ways to keep my kids healthy and ward of illness without the use of pharmaceuticals. I do try to avoid high fructose corn syrup when I am able to because I can tell by the kids’ behavior within 5 minutes of them eating it that they’ve had HCFS. They get all kinds of hyper!! My biggest reason for being interested in this book, aside from curiosity, is that all three of my children suffer from multiple rounds of ear infections every winter- frequently ones that don’t clear up without multiple rounds of antibiotics. This makes me nuts and I’m actively trying to figure out a way to prevent them or a more natural way to help my kids get through them- I had ear infections the same way as a child and I’ve often wondered if there are things we can consume- or not consume- to help ward off infections in our ears.
Ms. Dorfman has written an amazing resource that I think most parents will want to have. Even for myself- I have anxiety issues- realizing that there are things I can do for *me* not just the kids in terms of diet and nutrition to help with my overall well being is an eye opener. Definitely some good reading and food for thought (pun intended). Ms. Dorfman is doing a book tour (not to CT) and you can check out her site to see where she’ll be, when- I wish she’d be closer to me because I would LOVE to hear her talk about her book and her practice.
Fascinating Fact: Ninety percent of recurrent ear infections are caused by food allergies or reactions to food and can be prevented. I’m all over that.
Refreshingly different from ordinary nutrition books, WHAT’S EATING YOUR CHILD? pairs practical, scientifically-supported advice with fascinating case studies that read like medical mysteries. Here, you’ll meet the toddler whose violent mood swings and frequent colds disappeared after dairy was removed from his diet, the 8-year-old whose persistent rash was cured by a fish oil supplement, the tiny adolescent who rapidly shot up from the bottom growth percentile after taking zinc, and many other incredible stories.
The many ailments that can be improved through proper nutrition include:Aggression * Allergies * Anxiety * Bad breath * Behavioral issues * Bloating * Clumsiness *Colic * Constipation * Depression * Developmental delays * Diarrhea * Ear infections * Eating disorders *Failure to thrive * Frequent illness *Hives, rashes, and eczema * Hoarse voice * Insomnia * Joint pain * Learning disabilities * Moodiness and temper tantrums * Night terrors * Over-tiredness w Seizures * Sinus infections * Small stature * Speech delays * Tummy aches and vomiting
