Mr. Bargains was very happy to see SEVEN recipes under the “Bacon” section. Bacon IS yummy, but I don’t find that quite as exciting as he does!
Peg Bracken is the brains behind the I Hate to Cook Book. It was originally published 50 years ago and was
updated and revised to reflect kitchens and pantries of today . She throws wit and humor in pinches and dashes all through the book. Love it. Anything that makes cooking more fun or less stressful is great, in my house. You want to have this book in your collection. This Mama Loves it. Peg’s daughter, Jo, has helped to pen the 50th Anniversary of I Hate to Cook and apparantly, the humor gene does run in families.
I made the Swiss Loaf on page 12-13. I only altered it a little by “pulverizing” the pepper and onion- I hate the texture of both of these, so I kind of go overboard when chopping. The Swiss Loaf was the closest thing to meatloaf in this book and my whole family likes my meatloaf, so it was a safe starting point. I think later this week I may go OUT of my comfort zone and try something crazy like Turkey Divan on p. 48.
At the end of the book are the usual suspects with Ms. Bracken’s wit mixed in for measuring equivalents, etc. and also some Household Hints. I love things like this at the end of books!!
Now that you know a little about this book, wouldn’t you like to check the rest of it out? (I know you do). It will be available for purchase on July 26th but you can *win* a copy right here!!
As a mandatory entry, I want for you to share with me what your grandma and/or mom used to have for dinner when growing up. My mom used to make liver and onions with bacon and gravy. As if ruining perfectly innocent bacon and dumping fattening gravy on top could improve the horrifying taste of liver and onions. See? You CAN ruin bacon! It takes effort. (Please note that as we kids got older and perhaps less demanding of my mom’s attention she found she enjoyed cooking some and as she gained confidence, she gained skills, and actually had some fantastic dishes she made until she got too sick too cook – and even then directed my dad on how to cook her favorites from her bed so she could still enjoy them!)
